Velasquez* – দিয়াগো ভেলাস্কেজ (Diego Velasquez) ছিলেন স্পেন দেশের একজন বিখ্যাত চিত্রশিল্পী যিনি সপ্তদশ শতকে রাজা চতুর্থ ফিলিপের রাজদরবারের প্রধান শিল্পী ছিলেন এবং রাজ পরিবারের সদস্যদের পোট্রেট আঁকার জন্য বিখ্যাত ছিলেন।

Rembrandt* – রেমব্রান্ট ছিলেন একজন ডাচ (Dutch) চিত্রশিল্পী যিনি সপ্তদশ শতকের ডাচ স্বর্ণযুগের অন্যতম সেরা শিল্পী হিসাবে তাঁকে বিবেচনা করা হয়।

‘Poor old chap!’ said Hughie, ‘how miserable (মিসারেবল – দুর্দশাগ্রস্ত) he looks! But I suppose, to you painters, his face is his fortune?’

‘And how much do you get for your picture, Alan?’

After some time the servant came in, and told Trevor that the frame-maker wanted to speak to him.

The old man started (স্টার্টেড – চমকে ওঠা), and a faint (ফেন্ট – ক্ষীণ) smile flitted across his withered (হুইদারড – শুষ্ক) lips. ‘Thank you sir,’ he said, ‘thank you.’

It was in the course of an open-air meal in the Mogul Gardens at Achhabal*, that the Swami suddenly announced that he would go to Amarnath with the pilgrims (পিলগ্রিমস – তীর্থযাত্রী), and take his daughter with him.

আছাবলের মোগুল গার্ডেনে খোলা আকাশের নীচে খাবার সময়, স্বামীজি হঠাৎ ঘোষনা করলেন যে তিনি তীর্থযাত্রীদের সাথে অমরনাথ যাবেন, এবং তাঁর মেয়েকে সঙ্গে নেবেন।

Within our little party, there was too much feeling of delighted congratulation (কনগ্র্যাচুলেশন – অভিনন্দন), for any obstacle (অবস্টাকেল – বাধা) to be put in the way of the fortunate (ফরচুনেট – সৌভাগ্যবান) member.

And aided thus, as well as by the State officer, in charge of the journey, preparations went forward for this unique (ইউনিক – অদ্বিতীয়) experience.

Kashmir seemed, in those weeks, to be full of pilgrims.

We left Achhabal, and returned to our boats at Islamabad, for final arrangements, and everywhere we saw the march of gathering hosts.

The tent of the Tehsildar, – with that of the Swami on one side, and my own on the other, – was generally placed near some advantageous spot for the lighting of the evening fire, and thus his neighbourhood tended to form a social centre.

There were hundreds of monks, of all the orders, with their Gerrua tents, some no larger than a good-sized umbrella, and amongst these, the Swami’s influence appeared to be magnetic.

The same other-worldliness that made Swadesh and bidesh indistinguishable (ইনডিসটিংগুইশেবল – হুবহু একইরকম) , also prevented these simple souls from formally conceiving of a unity, in which Hindu and Mohammedan were but rival elements.

একই অন্য-জাগতিকতা যেটা স্বদেশ ও বিদেশকে পার্থক্যহীন করে তুলেছিল, সেটা এইসমস্ত সাধারন আত্মাগুলিকেও বাধা দিয়েছিল একটা ঐক্যের ধারনা তৈরি করতে, যাতে হিন্দু ও মহামেডানরা ছিল প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বী।

The soil of the Punjab, they argued, was drenched with the blood of those who had died for the faith.

In answer to this, as became one who was, in fact ‘an anachronism (অ্যানাক্রোনিসম – কালবৈষম্য) of the future’, the Swami made those practical concessions of the moment that were expressive of his love for the brethren (ব্রেদ্‌রেন – ভ্রাতৃবৃন্দ), and drove his principles home to their minds with the greater force and vehemence (ভেহেমেন্‌স – প্রচন্ডতা).

But, as he told the tale of his warm discussions, the foreign mind could not help, with some amusement (অ্যামিউসমেন্ট – চিত্তবিনোদন), noting the paradox (প্যারাডক্স – আত্মবিরোধী) that the Tehsildar* himself, and many officers and servants of the pilgrimage, had been Mussulmans, and that no one had dreamt of objecting to their entering the Cave with the Hindu worshippers, on the ultimate arrival at the shrine (শ্রাইন – মন্দির).

The Tehsildar came afterwards, indeed, with a group of friends, begging formal acceptance by the Swami as disciples (ডিসাইপল্‌স – শিষ্য); and in this, no one seemed to find anything incongruous (ইনকংগ্রুয়াস – অসঙ্গত) or surprising.

তহসিলদার পরে এসেছিলেন, প্রকৃতপক্ষে, একদল বন্ধুর সাথে, শিষ্য হিসাবে গ্রহণ করার জন্য স্বামীজির কাছে ভিক্ষা চাইলেন; এবং এতে, কেউই কিছু অসঙ্গতি বা আশ্চর্যজনক কিছু খুঁজে পায়নি।

Leaving Islamabad, we caught up some-where with the pilgrimage, and camped with it, for that night, at Pawan, a place famous for its holy springs (হোলি স্প্রিংস – পবিত্র প্রস্রবণ).

I can remember yet the brilliance (ব্রিলিয়ান্‌স – প্রভা) of the lights reflected in the clear black waters of the tank that evening, and throngs of pilgrims proceeding in little groups from shrine to shrine.

At Pahlgam – the village of the shepherds – the camp halted for a day, to keep ekadasi.

It was a beautiful little ravine (র‌্যাভাইন – গিরিখাত) floored, for the most part with sandy islands in the pebble-worn bed of a mountain stream.

At last the regular pathway came to an end, and we had to scramble up and down, along goat-paths, on the face of steep declivities (ডেক্লিভিটিজ – উতরাই), till we reached the boulder-strewn gorge (গর্জ – সরু গিরিখাত), in which the Cave of Amarnath was situated.

As we ascended this, we had before us the snow-peaks covered with a white veil (ভেইল – পর্দা), newly-fallen; and in the Cave itself, in a niche never reached by sunlight, shone the great ice-lingam, that must have seemed, to the awestruck (অস্ট্রাক – বিস্মিত) peasants who first came upon it, like the waiting Presence of God.
