Manoj Das (Born in 1934) is an Indian award-winning bilingual writer who writes in Oriya and English. He has written many novels, short stories, poems, travelogues and articles on history and culture.
মনোজ দাস (জন্ম-১৯৩৪) একজন ভারতীয় পুরষ্কারপ্রাপ্ত দ্বিভাষিক লেখক যিনি ওড়িয়া এবং ইংরেজিতে লেখেন। ইতিহাস ও সংস্কৃতি নিয়ে তিনি অনেক উপন্যাস, ছোট গল্প, কবিতা, ভ্রমণকাহিনী এবং নিবন্ধ লিখেছেন।
This text is an edited version of Das's short story which narrates Bhola Grandpa's hilarious adventures seen through the eyes of a young man who had known him closely. The simplicity and forgetfulness of Bhola Grandpa provides an element of humour on which the story hinges.

Bhola Grandpa and his wife lived at the western end of our village.
ভোলা দাদা ও তাঁর স্ত্রী আমাদের গ্রামের পশ্চিম প্রান্তে থাকতেন।
A large bokal tree overshadowed their hut.
একটি বড় বোকাল গাছ তাদের কুঁড়েঘরের উপরে ছায়া ফেলেছিল।
In the bokal tree lived a small troop of monkeys.
বোকাল গাছটিতে বানরদের একটি ছোট্ট দল থাকত।
Bhola Grandpa and his wife did not mind it.
ভোলা দাদা ও তার স্ত্রী এতে আপত্তি করেনি।
One moonlit night, we were returning from a festival.
এক চাঁদনি রাতে, আমরা একটি উত্সব থেকে ফিরছিলাম।
The road was long and foggy.
রাস্তাটি ছিল দীর্ঘ এবং কুয়াশাচ্ছন্ন ।
I was riding on the village chowkidar's shoulders.
আমি গ্রামের চৌকিদারের কাঁধে চড়ে ছিলাম।
Suddenly, Bhola Grandpa let out a loud wail.
হঠাৎ ভোলা দাদা জোরে কান্নাকাটি শুরু করল।
Everyone in our party was surprised.

We halted.

Enquiry revealed that Bhola Grandpa had taken his grandson to the festival.
অনুসন্ধানে জানা গেল যে ভোলা দাদা তাঁর নাতিকে উত্সবে নিয়ে গিয়েছিলেন।
He had tightly held on to the two fingers of the boy.
সে শক্ত করে ছেলেটির দুটি আঙুল চেপে ধরেছিলেন।
He did not realize when those fingers slipped out.
তিনি বুঝতে পারেন নি কখন সেই আঙ্গুলগুলি পিছলে গিয়েছিল।
Bhola Grandpa was continuing as before.
ভোলা দাদা আগের মতো চালিয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন।
Then someone asked Bhola Grandpa what he was gripping.
তারপরে কেউ ভোলা দাদাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করেছিলেন তিনি কী ধরে আছেন?
He remembered his grandson and let out a loud wail.
তিনি তার নাতির কথা স্মরণ করলেন এবং জোরে জোরে কাঁদতে লাগলেন।
My father chose two sharp-eyed men from our party to go back with Bhola Grandpa to the festival.

I remember another funny incident about Bhola Grandpa related by my father.

It had been a rainy afternoon.
এটা ছিল একটি বৃষ্টিবহুল বিকেল।
Bhola Grandpa, wild with excitement, told my father and his friends that he had seen a gang of pirates.

It was all a dream which he had during his midday nap.
মধ্যাহ্নের ঘুমের মধ্যেই তিনি এই স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলেন।
Once Bhola Grandpa had a great adventure in the Sunderbans.
একবার ভোলা দাদা সুন্দরবনে দুর্দান্ত দু:সাহসিক কাজ করেছিলেন।
In those days Royal Bengal tigers freely roamed the dense jungles of the Sunderbans.
সেই দিনগুলিতে রয়্যাল বেঙ্গল টাইগাররা সুন্দরবনের ঘন জঙ্গলে অবাধে বিচরণ করত।
People took care to move about only in groups, particularly after sundown.
লোকেরা কেবল দলবদ্ধ হয়ে চলাফেরা করত, বিশেষত সূর্যাস্তের পরে।
One evening, Bhola Grandpa was returning from the weekly market.
এক সন্ধ্যায় ভোলা দাদা সাপ্তাহিক বাজার থেকে ফিরছিলেন।
Suddenly at a distance of about five yards behind him, he heard the growl of a Royal Bengal tiger.
হঠাৎ তার পিছনে প্রায় পাঁচ গজ দূরত্বে, তিনি একটি রয়্যাল বেঙ্গল বাঘের গর্জন শুনতে পেলেন।
Bhola Grandpa turned and found the bright gaze of the tiger on his face.
ভোলা দাদা মুখ ফিরিয়ে বাঘের উজ্জ্বল দৃষ্টি দেখতে পেলেন।
Bhola Grandpa instantly climbed up a nearby banyan tree.
ভোলা দাদা সঙ্গে সঙ্গে নিকটে একটি বটগাছের উপরে উঠে গেলেন।
The tiger roared and circled the tree about a hundred times.
বাঘ গর্জন করে প্রায় একশত বার গাছটি প্রদক্ষিণ করেছিল।
Then it settled down under a bush without taking its eyes off him.
তারপরে চোখ না সরিয়ে এটি একটি ঝোপের নীচে স্থির হয়ে বসে পড়ল।
With nightfall, the forest grew dark and silent.

Bhola Grandpa could hear the tiger beating its tail on the dry leaves.

Dawn broke with the cooing of doves.

There was a group of men on a mound a little away.
কিছুদূর একটি ঢিবির উপরে ছিল একদল পুরুষ।
Bhola Grandpa climbed the mound and requested the first man he saw for some water to drink.
ভোলা দাদা সেই ঢিবিতে আরোহণ করলেন এবং প্রথম লোকটিকে যাকে তিনি দেখলেন তাকে পান করার জন্য জলের অনুরোধ করলেন।
The man had seen the tiger waiting.
লোকটি বাঘকে অপেক্ষা করতে দেখেছিল।
He was much bewildered.
সে খুবই হতবাক হয়েছিল।
“What is your secret that you simply walked past the hungry beast and it did nothing?” he asked Bhola Grandpa.
"আপনার রহস্যটি কী যে আপনি একটি ক্ষুধার্ত জন্তুর পাশ দিয়ে হেটে পার হয়ে আসলেন এবং এটি কিছুই করেনি?" তিনি ভোলা দাদাকে জিজ্ঞাসা করলেন।
The tiger was stretching its limbs and yawning.
বাঘটি তার অঙ্গগুলি প্রসারিত করছিল এবং হাই তুলছিল ।
Then, Bhola Grandpa remembered the tiger and looked at it.
তারপরে, ভোলা দাদা বাঘের কথা স্মরণ করে তাকালেন।
Bhola Grandpa almost lost his senses in fear.
ভোলা দাদা ভয়ে প্রায় তার হুঁশ হারিয়ে ফেলেন।
He ran back home.

Half a century later, Bhola Grandpa left us forever one morning at the age of ninety-five.

His eighty-year old wife lamented much.
তাঁর আশি বছরের বৃদ্ধা স্ত্রী বিলাপ করেছিলেন।
She said with a sigh, “The old man must have forgotten to breathe.”
তিনি দীর্ঘশ্বাস ফেলে বললেন, "বৃদ্ধ লোকটি অবশ্যই শ্বাস নিতে ভুলে গেছে।"
