IDENTIFYING PHRASES®
Phrase কে identify করতে মূলত Phrase টির কাজের উপর নির্ভর করতে হয়। তবে বোঝার জন্যে বিভিন্ন ধরণের Phrase এর গঠনও জানা প্রয়োজন।
বিভিন্ন Phrase এর কাজ ও গঠন:
1. #NOUN_PHRASE
গঠন: Determiner + Adverb + Adjective + Noun Adjective + Noun (Head Word)
যেমন: A very beautiful gold ring
তবে Noun (Head Word)এর পূর্বে যে কোন প্রকারের (Determiner / Adverb / Adjective / Noun Adjective )কমপক্ষে একটি শব্দও থাকতে পারে। যেমন: The boy একটি Noun Phrase
Phrase identify করতে হলে আমাদের Determiner সম্পর্কে জানতে হবে। তাই আমাদের সম্পূর্ন সিলেবাস শেষ করতে হলে আগে থেকে Determiner নিয়ে আলোচনা করতে হবে। তাহলে এখন Determiner কি এবং কত প্রকার।
Note: Determiners হল ৫ প্রকার যথা:
a) Articles: a, an, the.
b) Demonstrative (ইঙ্গিত বাচক শব্দ): This, that, These, Those,
c) Possessive (র/এর বাচক শব্দ): My, his, her, your, our, its, their.
d) Numerals (সংখ্যাবাচক শব্দ): Two, three, four, five, etc.
e) Quantifiers (পরিমানবাচক শব্দ): Some, many, much, a lot, all, few, enough, either, neither, a great deal of, a lot of, plenty of, several, a great number of.
2. #ADJECTIVE_PHRASE
গঠন: Adjective + এক বা একাধিক Phrase : He is fond of music. / I am glad to meet you.
Adjective Phrase বাক্যে ব্যবহৃত হয়ে Adjective এর মত অন্য কোন Noun, Pronoun বা Noun Phrase এর দোষ, গুণ, অবস্থা বৈশিষ্ট ইত্যাদি প্রকাশ করে । যেমন:
(a) The girl in the left is my sister.
(b) The fox without a tail called a meeting.
(c) The man with the dog came here.
(d) Mr. Chowdhury was a leader second to none.
3. #ADVERB_PHRASE
এর কোন আলাদা গঠন নেই। এই ধরণের Phrase গুলো Verb কোথায়, কেন, কখন, কিভাবে সম্পন্ন হয়- এসব প্রশ্নের উত্তর দেয়। যেমন:
(a) He beat the dog black and blue.
(b) You tried heart and soul to succeed.
(c) He left the village for ever or for good.
(d) The two sisters sat under the tree.
4. #PREPOSITIONAL_PHRASE
Noun এর আগে একটি Preposition এবং পরে একটি Preposition যুক্ত হলে তাকে Prepositional Phrase বলে । অথবা prepositional phrase এমন একটি group of words, যা একটি Preposition দ্বারা শুরু হয় । যেমন:
(a) There is a garden in front of my house.
(b) She is at the point of death.
(c) He took history in lieu of mathematics.
(d) I will not come on account of his illness.
5. #CONJUNCTIONAL_PHRASE
এর কোন আলাদা গঠন নেই। এ Phrase বাক্যে conjunction এর কাজ করে অর্থাৎ কোন phrase / clause কে যুক্ত করে ।
যথা: (a) I shall come back as soon as I can. (b) Not only he but also his father went there. (c) No sooner had he reached home than I left. (d) Fahim as well as his friends has decided to visit London .
6. #INTERJECTIONAL_PHRASE
এর কোন আলাদা গঠন নেই।যে Phrase দ্বারা বাক্যে আবেগ, অনুভূতি ও বিষ্ময় প্রকাশ পায় তাকে Interjectional phrase বলে।
যথা:
(a) Oh dear me! What shall I do?
b) What a pity! He is undone.
7. #PHRASAL_VERB
গঠন: Principal Verb + preposition / prepositional phrase
যথা: (a) She looked at the moon.
(b) We looked for a smart boy.
(c) Mina looks after her goats.
(d) Put on your shirt.
(e) He gave up smoking.
8. #VERB_PHRASE
গঠন: এক বা একাধিক Auxiliary verb + Principal Verb. যথা: The boy can climb a tree. / He will have done this work.
Identifying phrases (as per British council)
A group of words, which makes sense, but not complete sense, is called a Phrase. It is a group of related words without a Subject and a Verb.A Phrase consists of two or more words lacking a complete sense and a complete verb. It may consist of one or more incomplete verbs - the Infinitives or the Participles standing on their own.
Words/group of words in italics are phrases in examples below:
Example
The sun rises in the east
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall.
She wore a hat with blue trimming.
The accident on the bridge was not serious.
The girl with red hair is an artist.
Sasha took a long leave.
Holding the toy, the child slept.
