A Brief Discussion About the Story:

Jimmy Valentine is an interesting short-story of O. Henry. The main character of the story is Jimmy Valentine. The whole story revolves round Jimmy. He is a top class burglar. He loots banks, leaving no clue. The police suspect him but hardly arrest him. A noted detective can spot him out. But Jimmy is not at all bad at heart. After a big bank burglary Jimmy changes his address. He comes to settle in Elmore. Here he suddenly changes for the better. 

It is all for Annabel Lee, a banker’s daughter. Jimmy falls in love with her. Jimmy the burglar is transformed into Mr. Ralph D. Spencer, the businessman. Jimmy opens a shoe-shore in Elmore and soon his business thrives. Jimmy and Anabel are engaged. So far there is no twist in the story. 

But an accident takes place. Annabel’s cousin gets locked in a vault in her father’s bank. None can open the lock. It is a new vault. The system of unlocking the vault is not known. Obviously, all are panicky. The situation comes to such a pass that Jimmy has to use his expertise. He knows the result of his work. To save the life of the girl means the public exposure of his past identity. But he does not hesitate. Anyway, the girl has been saved. And Jimmy comes face to face with the detective, Ben Price who has long been watching the whole scene. Here again the story takes an abrupt turn. Then the ball is in the court of the detective. Yet Jimmy wins the game. For, the detective  refuses to recognize Jimmy. Thus the story, within its short compass upholds the whole of Jimmy.

Ans:- ➢After spending a year in Elmore and settle himself as a prosperous businessman, Jimmy wrote a letter to his old friend Billy. He asked Billy to meet him at Sullivan’s place on next Wednesday.  He wanted to wind up some little matters and to present him the burglar’s tools. He did not need them because he wished to lead an honest life. He had a nice shoe-store. He also informed Billy that within two weeks, he was going to marry the finest girl on earth.

➢He wrote the letter to inform Billy about his present position as a successful businessman and his future-plans after marriage. He realised that leading an honest life was the only life. His words showed Jimmy’s reformation as a good human being.

Ans. After coming out of the jail, Jimmy headed straight for a restaurant ignoring the natural beauties like the songs of birds, the waving green trees, and the smell of the flowers. Then he reached the depot and before entering the train, he tossed a quarter of a dollar in the hat of a blind man. Ans:- ➢  Jimmy is a professional burglar. Jimmy has a suitcase and it contains a complete set of the finest burglary tools made of special tempered steel. It contains latest designs in drills, punches, braces and bits, jimmies, clamps and augers. Some of them are quite novel as they are invented by Jimmy himself.

➢After being released from prison, Jimmy appears in his secret dormitory. There he took out his suitcase filled with dirt from a secret place on the wall. He then opens the suitcase and looks at the instruments in it with absolute affection, because these instruments were the most perfect set of stealing tools in the East. As a professional safe-cracker, he uses all the tools effectively. His profession success mostly depends upon these tools. Again, some of his tools are his own making. Obviously, he has great attachment to his invention. Besides, these tools cost him over nine hundred dollars. Jimmy knows the secret of his success lies in the effectivity of his favourite set of tools. Hence, I think Jimmy fondly gazes at them.

Ans:- ➢  The speaker is Ben Price, the detective.

Ben Price, the detective investigated the scenes of the robberies and confirmed that those were the handwork of none other than Jimmy Valentine. Jimmy was a professional burglar. He did not leave any clue of his misdeeds. He jerked out the combination lock using his special tools. He used his drill to make only one hole in the vault. The tumblers were punched out clearly. Ben Price knew these were Jimmy’s signature style. By comparing with these notes, a remarkable similarity in the methods of burglary was detected which showed the invisible autograph of Jimmy Valentine.

A guard came to the prison shoe-shop, where Jimmy Valentine was assiduously stitching uppers, and escorted him to the front office.

At a quarter past seven on the next morning Jimmy stood in the warden’s outer office.

On the Monday night after Jimmy wrote this letter, Ben Price jogged unobtrusively into Elmore in a livery buggy.

He lounged about town in his quiet way until he found out what he wanted to know.

From the drug-store across the street from Spencer’s shoe-store he got a good look at Ralph D. Spencer.

The next morning Jimmy took breakfast at the Adamses.

He was going to Little Rock that day to order his wedding-suit and buy something nice for Annabel.

Mr Adams beamingly explained its workings to Mr Spencer, who showed a courteous but not too intelligent interest.

“Hush!” said Mr Adams, raising his trembling hand.

“চুপ!” মিঃ অ্যাডামস কাঁপতে থাকা হাত বাড়িয়ে বললেন। 

“All be quiet for a moment. Agatha!” he called as loudly as he could.

“সবাই এক মুহুর্তের জন্য চুপ করে থাকুন। আগাথা! “তিনি যথাসম্ভব চেঁচিয়ে ডাকলেন।

“Listen to me.” During the following silence they could just hear the faint sound of the child wildly shrieking in the dark vault in a panic of terror.

“My precious darling!” wailed the mother.

“She will die of fright! Open the door!

“সে ভয়ে মরে যাবে! দরজাটি খুলুন!

Oh, break it open! Can’t you men do something?”

“There isn’t a man nearer than Little Rock who can open that door,” said Mr Adams, in a shaky voice.

Jimmy stuffed it into his vest pocket , threw off his coat and pulled up his shirt-sleeves.

Importance of School Library

A school library is a library within the school premises for use by the students and the teachers. Students can gain knowledge by reading school library books. These books are costly and the students get the opportunity to read such rich treasures of wisdom. In this way, they can prepare themselves for examination. They can enhance their knowledge by going through the books of knowledge. There are sets of books like the works of Rabindranath Tagore, collected works of Bankimchandra, Vivekananda, Saratchandra, etc. All these books build the foundation of a strong character in a student. However, it is needless to say that a school library can provide the students morality, punctuality and disciplined.

    

A Memorable Day of My Life 

Human life is overflowing with events and moments. Among these infinite incidents, some of them are pleasant, some aren’t, and we remember those for long. For me, the most memorable event has to be my first day at my school. It was my new school. I came here after finishing my primary education. I joined the 5^th graders and made many new friends. My class teacher, Mrs Pramanik, was very polite yet charismatic when she taught us.
After my lessons, some of my friends and I went to the school canteen and had our lunch in together. My first day at school was full of happy feelings. Even though this might seem like any other school day, it had a lasting impression on me. The experience was soothing and calming. That day was well spent and memorable.

All children, and even grown ups, are fond of keeping pets. Some have fishes,  cats, rabbits and parrots at their pets. I have a dog for a pet.The name of my pet dog is Tarzan. He is a very ferocious dog. He is dark brown in colour and barks very loudly at all strangers. Even the postman and other delivery men are scared of coming inside our house. He loves to eat bread, meat and drink milk. It accompanies me for my walks and enjoys barking at other dogs. I always put Tarzan on a leash so that the passerby’s do not get scared. I bathe it daily with dog soap and also comb its hair- coat. Tarzan is a clean dog and never spoils the house.

I am Miraz Islam, a student who’s studying in Kolsur High School (H.S), a prestigious school in our city. It’s a city where I grew up. I live in a small village named Atghara with my family. Almost everyone is kind at least one sport. The one competition that I am good at is football. In my school, almost everyone had an obsession with the sport, and so did I. Every game period, my teacher would make us play football, along with other games. Over the years, the way I played football improved, and while learning the game, I discovered other lessons as well. One of the lessons I’ve learned is how to play in a team. When you play in a group, you depend on each other for winning. I have always been energetic and lively. While many people feel awkward and weird, making me friends, I have no problems with making new friends. I can talk to everyone quickly and know them.

      Festivals of Bengal" 

The proverb ' Baro mase tero parban ' proves that Bengales are found of festivals. Bengali year begins with 'Navabarsha' on 25 th Baisak we observe Rabindra Jayanti. The independence day, the republic day, the birth days of Gandhiji, Nataji are also observed as national festivals. In autumn we observe our greatest festival Durga Puja. It is an occasion of putting on new dresses, joy and merriment. Then comes Laxmi puja .

It is held in every home for wealth. Next we get kali puja and Dewali. Students worship Saraswati Puja . We also observe Rathyatra , Holi, Nabanna, Vatridwitiya, Rakhi purnima etc. The Muslims observe the Id Maharam, etc. The Christians observe X-Mas, Good Friday etc. On such occasions people mix together with the sprit of brother hood. Thus festivals destroy separation , give us joy and pleases our mind above all.

The Usefulness of Physical Exercise

A certain critic remarks, "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy". So, we should practice physical exercise daily. It is a vital means of making our physical fit and fine. It's just for good health. We all know the wise statement that, " Health is wealth". Health generally means a sound state of mind and body owning Joy of living. It's key to happiness. But good health is not achieved without regular exercise. Through practicing exercise our body gets more active than before. It is beneficial for gaining concentration and self-energy. If the body is a temple, the exercises are worship we need to perform. For the very beginning, everyone should wake up early in the morning and start walking. This is to notify that the ‘Students’ Club’ of our school is going to organize an Online Debate Competition on 25th October, 2021. Only the students of classes IX and X can participate in the debate competition. The motion of the debate is- “Online classes harm the real learning temper of the students”. Two groups of students will be made, one for the motion, and the other against it. ‘Each speaker can speak online for four minutes either for the motion or against it. To attend the debate participants need not gather anywhere. Using their smartphones they can participate in the competition online from their homes. Interested students from these classes are hereby asked to submit their names through e-mail or WhatsApp within 23rd October, 2021 to the undersigned. Co-operation from all concerned is highly solicited.
