It once occurred to a certain Tsar,

একদা এক জারের মনে হল, 

that if he always knew the right time to begin everything; 

যে তিনি যদি সর্বদা প্রত্যেকটা কাজ শুরু করার সঠিক সময়টা জানতেন; 

if he knew who were the right people to listen to, 

যদি জানতেন কাদের কথা তিনি শুনবেন 

and whom to avoid, 

এবং কাদেরকে এড়িয়ে চলবেন; 

and, above all, 

এবং সর্বোপরি, 

if he always knew what was the most important thing to do, 

যদি তিনি সর্বদা জানতেন কোন কাজটা সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ,

he would never fail in anything he might undertake. 

তাহলে তিনি যেসব কাজের দায়িত্বভার নিতেন তার কোন কিছুতেই ব্যর্থ হতেন না

And this thought having occurred to him, এবং এই ভাবনাটা তাঁর মনে হওয়াতে

 he had it proclaimed throughout his kingdom 

তিনি তাঁর রাজ্যজুড়ে ঘোষণা করলেন 

that he would give a great reward to any one who would teach him what was the right time for every action, 

যে তিনি যে কোনো ব্যক্তিকে দারুণ পুরস্কার দেবেন যে তাঁকে শেখাতে পারবে প্রত্যেকটা কাজ শুরু করার সঠিক সময় কোনটাand who were the most necessary people, এবং কারা সবথেকে দরকারি লোকজন 

and how he might know what was the most important thing to do. 

এবং কীভাবে তাঁর পক্ষে জানা সম্ভব কোনটা সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ।

And learned men came to the Tsar, 

এবং শিক্ষিত ব্যাক্তিরা জারের কাছে এলেন, 

but they all answered his questions differently. 

কিন্তূ তাঁরা সকলেই তাঁর প্রশ্নের ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ভাবে উত্তর দিল।

In reply to the first question, 

প্রথম প্রশ্নের উত্তরে , 

some said that 

কেউ কেউ বললেন যে 

to know the right time for every action, প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় জানতে, 

one must draw up in advance, 

যে কাউকেই আগের থেকে তৈরি করে ফেলতে হবে 

a table of days, months and years, 

দিন , মাস, ও বছরের একটি তালিকা 

and must live strictly according to it. 

এবং কঠোর ভাবে জীবন যাপন করতে হবে সেই অনুযায়ী।

 Only thus, শুধুমাত্র এইভাবেই, 

said they, তাঁরা বলেছিল, 

could everything be done at its proper time.

প্রতিটি কাজ সঠিক সময়ে করা যেতে পারে।

Others declared that 

অন্যরা জানাল যে 

it was impossible to decide beforehand the right time for every action; 

প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় আগের থেকে স্থির করা একেবারেই অসম্ভব ; 

but that, not letting oneself be absorbed in idle pastimes, 

কিন্তূ অলস অবসর বিনোদনে নিজেকে নিমগ্ন না রেখে 

one should always attend to all that was going on, 

যে কারুরই উচিত সর্বদা যা কিছু ঘটে চলেছে তাতেই মনোনিবেশ করা, 

and then do what was most needful. 

এবং তারপরে সেটাই করা উচিত যা সবথেকে বেশি প্রয়োজনীয়।

Others, again, said that 

আবার অন্যরা বললেন যে 

however attentive the Tsar might be to what was going on, 

যা কিছু ঘটে চলেছে তাতে জার যতই মনযোগী হন না কেন 

it was impossible for one man to decide correctly the right time for every action, 

কোন একজন মানুষের পক্ষে প্রত্যেক কাজের সঠিক সময় সঠিকভাবে নির্ণয় করা অসম্ভব। 

but that he should have a Council of Wise Men, 

কিন্তূ তাঁর একটা জ্ঞানী ব্যাক্তিদের সভা থাকা উচিত, 

who would help him to fix the proper time for everything. 

যারা তাঁকে সাহায়্য করবে প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় নিরূপণ করতে।

But then again others said 

কিন্তু তারপরে অন্যরা আবার বললেন 

there were some things which could not wait to be laid before a Council, 

এমন অনেক ব্যপার আছে যেগুলি সভাসদদের সামনে উত্থাপিত হওয়া পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করতে পারে না, 

but about which one had at once to decide whether to undertake them or not. 

কিন্তু সেগুলোর ব্যাপারে সেই মুহূর্তে সিদ্ধান্ত্য নিতে হয় সে কাজে হস্তক্ষেপ করা হবে কি হবে না। 

But in order to decide that, 

কিন্তু শুধুমাত্র এই সিধান্ত নিতে, 

one must know beforehand what was going to happen. 

অতি অবশ্যই যে কারুরই আগের থেকে জানতে হবে কি ঘটতে চলেছে। 

It is only magicians who know that; and, আর এটি শুধুমাত্র যাদুকররাই জানে ; আর

therefore, in order to know the right time for every action,

তাই প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় জানার জন্য 

one must consult magicians. 

যে কারুরই অতি অবশ্যই যাদুকরের সহিত পরামর্শ করা দরকার ।

Equally various were the answers to the second question. 

একই রকম ভাবে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ছিল দ্বিতীয় প্রশ্নের উত্তর ও । 

Some said, কেউ কেউ বললেন , 

the people the Tsar most needed were his councilors; 

জারের সবথেকে যাদের বেশি দরকার তাঁরা হলেন তাঁর সভাসদগন ; 

others, the priests;  

 অন্যরা বললেন, পুরহিতগণ

others, the doctors; 

অন্যরা বললেন ডাক্তারগন ; 

while some said the warriors were the most necessary. 

আবার কয়েকজন বললেন যোদ্ধারা সবথেকে দরকারি

To the third question, 

তৃতীয় প্রশ্নের উত্তরে 

as to what was the most important occupation: 

সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ কিঃ 

some replied that 

কেউ কেউ উত্তর দিলেন যে

 the most important thing in the world was science.

জগতে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল বিজ্ঞান চর্চা

 Others said it was skill in warfare; 

অন্যরা বললেন , তা হল যুদ্ধে দক্ষতা ; 

and others, again, 

আবার অন্যরা বললেন 

that it was religious worship. 

যে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল ধর্মীয় পূজার্চনা। All the answers being different, 

সকল উত্তর ভিন্ন ভিন্ন হওয়ায়, 

the Tsar agreed with none of them, 

জার কারও উত্তরে সহমত হলেন না, 

and gave the reward to none. 

এবং কাহাকেও পুরস্কৃত করলেন না। 

But still wishing to find the right answers to his questions, 

কিন্তূ তাঁর প্রশ্নগুলোর সঠিক উত্তর জানার ইচ্ছেয়

he decided to consult a hermit, 

তিনি এক সন্ন্যাসীর সহিত পরামর্শের সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন, 

widely renowned for his wisdom. 

যিনি তাঁর জ্ঞানের জন্যে বিক্ষাত ছিলেন।

The hermit lived in a wood which he never quitted, 

হারমিট বাস করতেন এক জঙ্গলে যেখান থেকে তিনি কক্ষনো বাইরে আসেননি 

and he received none but common folk.

এবং তিনি সাধারণ লোক ছাড়া অন্যকাউকে গ্রহণ করতেন না। 

So the Tsar put on simple clothes, 

তাই জার সাধারণ পোশাক পরলেন 

and before reaching the hermit's cell dismounted from his horse, 

আর হারমিটের কুটীরে পৌঁছনোর আগে তাঁর ঘোড়া থেকে নেমে পড়লেন 

and, leaving his bodyguard behind, went on alone.

আর দেহরক্ষীকে পেছনে রেখে তিনি একাকি চললেন।

When the Tsar approached, 

জার যখন পৌঁছলেন 

the hermit was digging the ground in front of his hut. 

কুটীরের সামনে হারমিট মাটি খুঁড়ছিলেন।

Seeing the Tsar, he greeted him and went on digging. 

জারকে দেখিয়া, তিনি স্বাগত জানালেন এবং আবার মাটি খুঁড়তে রইলেন।

The hermit was frail and weak, 

হারমিট শীর্ণকায় ও দুর্বল ছিলেন। 

and each time he stuck his spade into the ground and turned a little earth, 

এবং প্রত্যেকবার তিনি মাটিতে কোদালের কোপ দিয়ে অতিঅল্প মাটি উল্টে 

he breathed heavily. 

তিনি জোরে জোরে শ্বাস নিচ্ছিলেন। 

The Tsar went up to him and said: 

জার তাঁর কাছে গেলেন এবং বললেন, 

"I have come to you, wise hermit, 

আমি আপনার কাছে এসেছি , বিজ্ঞ হারমিট, 

to ask you to answer three questions: আপনার কাছ থেকে তিনটি প্রশ্নের উত্তর জানতেঃ

How can I learn to do the right thing at the right time? 

আমি কীভাবে সঠিক সময়ে সঠিক কাজটা করা শিখতে পারি ? 

Who are the people I most need, 

আমার সবথেকে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যক্তি কারা ,

and to whom should I, therefore, pay more attention than to the rest? 

এবং ,সেকারনে, কাদের প্রতি অন্যদের তুলনায় বেশি মনযোগ দেওয়া উচিৎ? 

And, what affairs are the most important and need my first attention?" 

এবং কোন ব্যাপারগুলো সবচেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ , এবং জাতে আমার প্রথম মনোযোগ দেওয়া উচিৎ।

The hermit listened to the Tsar, 

হারমিট জারের কথা শুনলেন, 

but answered nothing. 

কিন্তূ কোন উত্তর দিলেন না । 

He just spat on his hand and recommenced digging. 

তিনি তাঁর হাতে থুতু ফেললেন এবং আবার মাটি খুঁড়তে শুরু করলেন। 

"You are tired," said the Tsar, 

জার বললেন, আপনি ক্লান্ত 

"let me take the spade and work awhile for you." 

আমাকে কোদালটি নিতে দিন এবং কিছুক্ষণের জন্য কাজ করতে দিন আপনার জন্য। 

"Thanks!" said the hermit, 

হারমিট ধন্যবাদ জানালেন, 

and, giving the spade to the Tsar, 

এবং, জারকে কদালটি দিয়ে 

he sat down on the ground. 

তিনি মাটিতে বসে পড়লেন।

When he had dug two beds, 

তিনি যখন ২ টি বীজতলা প্রস্তুত সম্পন্ন করলেন,

 the Tsar stopped and repeated his questions. 

জার থামলেন এবং তাঁর প্রশ্ন গুলি পুনরাবৃত্তি করলেন। 

The hermit again gave no answer, 

এবার ও হারমিট কোন উত্তর করলেন না, 

but rose, বরং stretched out his hand for the spade, and said, 

কোদালের জন্য হাত বাড়ালেন এবং বললেন

 "Now rest awhile--and let me work a bit." এখন তুমি একটু বিশ্রাম নাও – এবং আমায় কিছুক্ষণ কাজ করতে দাও। 

But the Tsar did not give him the spade, কিন্তূ জার তাঁকে কোদাল দিলেন না, 

and continued to dig. 

এবং মাটি খুঁড়তে রইলেন।

One hour passed, একঘণ্টা কাটল 

and another. তারপরে ও একঘণ্টা। 

The sun began to sink behind the trees, গাছ পালার ওপারে সূর্য ডুবতে শুরু করলো 

and the Tsar at last stuck the spade into the ground, and said,

জার কোদালের শেষ কোপ মাটিতে দিল আর বললেন

  "I came to you, wise man, for an answer to my questions. 

হে জ্ঞানী ব্যক্তি , আমি আপনার কাছে এসেছিলাম আমার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তরের জন্য । 

If you can give me none,

আপনি যদি আমায় উত্তর না দিতে পারবেন, 

tell me so, আমাকে বলুন 

and I will return home."
এবং আমি বাড়ি ফিরে যাব। 

"Here comes some one running," 

এদিকে কেউ একজন ছুটতে ছুটতে আসছে 

said the hermit, হারমিট বললেন, 

"let us see who it is."   দেখা যাক কে তিনি।
The Tsar turned round,   জার পেছনে ঘুরলেন,

 and saw a bearded man come running out of the wood. 

এবং দেখলেন একজন দাঁড়ি ওয়ালা লোক ছুটতে ছুটতে বন থেকে আসছে।

The man held his hands pressed against his stomach, লোকটি দুহাত দিয়ে পেটে চেপে ধরে রেখেছে and blood was flowing from under them. আর তার তলা দিয়ে রক্ত গল গল করে বইছে। When he reached the Tsar, সে যখন জারের কাছে পৌঁছল , he fell fainting on the ground moaning feebly. সে মাটিতে লুটিয়ে পড়ল ক্ষীণভাবে বিড়বিড় করতে করতে। The Tsar and the hermit unfastened the man's clothing. জার এবং হারমিট লোকটির লোকটির পোশাকের বাঁধন খুলেফেললেন। There was a large wound in his stomach. তার পেটে এক বিরাট ক্ষত ।

The Tsar washed it as best he could, জার সেটাকে যতটা ভালোভাবে পারেন পরিষ্কার করলেন and bandaged it with his handkerchief and with a towel the hermit had.এবং ক্ষতটিতে বাঁধন দিলেন তাঁর রুমাল এবং হারমিটের তোয়ালে দিয়ে। But the blood would not stop flowing, কিন্তূ রক্ত বওয়া বন্ধ হল না and the Tsar again and again remove the bandage soaked with warm blood ,

এবং জার বারে বারে উষ্ণ রক্তে ভেজা বাঁধনটিকে খুললেন and washed and rebandaged the wound. এবং ধুলেন এবং ক্ষতটিকে পরিষ্কার করলেন এবং বাঁধন দিলেন।
When at last the blood ceased flowing ,যখন অবশেষে রক্ত ঝরা বন্ধ হল, the man revived লোকটি জ্ঞান ফিরে পেল and asked for something to drink. এবং কিছু একটা পান করতে চাইল । The Tsar brought fresh water and gave it to him. জার তাজা জল এনে তাকে দিল।

 Meanwhile the sun had set, ইতিমধ্যে সূর্য ডুবে গেছে and it had become cool. এবং বেশ ঠাণ্ডা পড়েছে। So the Tsar, with the hermit's help, carried the wounded man into the hut তাই জার হারমিটের সহায়তা নিয়ে লোক টিকে কুটীরের মধ্যে বয়ে আনলেন and laid him on the bed. এবং তাকে বিছানায় শুইয়ে দিলেন। Lying on the bed the man closed his eyes and was quiet;

বিছানায় শুইয়া লোকটি চোখ বন্ধ করলেন এবং শান্ত হলেন। but the Tsar was so tired with his walk and with the work he had done,কিন্তূ জার তাঁর হাঁটাহাঁটি আর যে কাজ তিনি করেছিলেন তাতে এতটাই ক্লান্ত হয়ে পড়লেন, that he crouched down on the threshold, যে তিনি দরজার চৌকাঠের ওপর শুয়ে পড়লেন and also fell asleep এবং ঘুমিয়ে পড়লেন --so soundly that he slept all through the short summer night. এতই সশব্দে বা গভিরভাবে যে তিনি সংক্ষিপ্ত গ্রীষ্মের সারারাত ধরে তিনি ঘুমালেন।

When he awoke in the morning, তিনি যখন সকালে জেগে উঠলেন it was long before he could remember where he was,দীর্ঘক্ষণ তিনি মনে করতে পারছিলেন না তিনি কোথায় রয়েছেন or who was the strange bearded man lying on the bed অথবা অপরিচিত দাড়িওয়ালা লোকটি কে বিছানায় শুয়ে রয়েছেন and gazing intently at him with shining eyes.

এবং এক দৃষ্টে তাকিয়ে রয়েছে জ্বলজ্বল চোখে। "Forgive me!" said the bearded man in a weak voice, দাঁড়ি ওয়ালা লোকটি দুর্বল স্বরে বললেন “ আমায় ক্ষমা করুণ ” , when he saw that the Tsar was awake and was looking at him. যখন সে দেখল জার জেগে উঠেছেন এবং তাকে দেখছেন। "I do not know you, and have nothing to forgive you for," said the Tsar. জার বললেন “আমি তোমাকে চিনি না, তাই ক্ষমা করার কোন কারন নেই ” । 

"You do not know me, but I know you. আপনি আমাকে চেনেন না, কিন্তূ আমি আপনাকে চিনি । I am that enemy of yours আমি আপনার সেই শত্রু who swore to revenge himself on you, যে আপনার উপর প্রতিশোধ নিতে চেয়েছিল because you executed his brother and seized his property. কারন আপনি তার ভাইকে প্রাণদণ্ড দিয়েছেন এবং তাঁর সম্পত্তি বাজেয়াপ্ত করেছেন

I knew you had gone alone to see the hermit, আমি জানতাম আপনি একাকী হারমিটের সহিত দেখা করতে গেছেন, and I resolved to kill you on your way back. এবং আপনার ফেরার পথে আপনাকে হত্যা করে আমার প্রতিহিংসা চরিতার্থের ইচ্ছে ছিল ।

But the day passed and you did not return. কিন্তূ দিন অতিক্রান্ত হল আর আপনি ফিরলেন না So I came out from my ambush to find you, তাই আমি আমার গোপন ডেরা থেকে বেরিয়ে পড়লাম তোমায় খুঁজতে and I came upon your bodyguard, আর আমি এসে পড়লাম তোমার দেহরক্ষীদের হাতে and they recognized me, আর তাঁরা আমাকে চিনতে পারলো and wounded me. এবং আমাকে আহত করল। I escaped from them, আমি কোন রকমে তাদের থেকে বাঁচলাম but should have bled to death had you not dressed my wound. কিন্তূ রক্তপাতের ফলে মারা যেতাম যদিনা আপনি আমার ক্ষত স্থানে বাঁধন দিতেন।

I wished to kill you, কোথায় আমি আপনাকে মারতে চেয়েছিলাম, and you have saved my life. আর তুমি আমার জীবন বাঁচালে। Now, if I live, and if you wish it, এখন , আমি যদি বেঁচে থাকি, আর আপনি যদি চান , I will serve you as your most faithful slave, আমি আপনার সবথেকে বিশ্বাসী দাস হয়ে আপনার সেবা করব, and will bid my sons do the same. এবং আমার ছেলেদের ও বলবো তাই করতে। Forgive me!" আমাকে ক্ষমা করুণ! The Tsar was very glad to have made peace with his enemy so easily, জার খুব খুশি হলেন তাঁর শত্রুর সহিত এত সহজে শান্তি স্থাপন করিয়া ,

and to have gained him for a friend, ও তাকে বন্ধু হিসেবে পেয়ে and he not only forgave him, তিনি শুধু তাকে ক্ষমা করলেন না but said he would send his servants and his own physician to attend him, বরং বললেন তিনি তাঁর চাকরদের ও নিজস্ব চিকিৎসকে পাঠিয়ে দেবেন তার দেখাশোনা করতে and promised to restore his property. এবং স্পথ করলেন তাকে তার সম্পত্তি ফিরিয়ে দেবেন।

Having taken leave of the wounded man, আহত লোকটির কাছ থেকে বিদায় নিয়ে the Tsar went out into the porch and looked around for the hermit. জার কুটীর থেকে বেরিয়ে উঠানে এলেন এবং চারিদিকে হারমিটের খোঁজ করতে লাগলেন । Before going away he wished once more to beg an answer to the questions he had put. চলে যাওয়ার আগে আর একবার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর প্রার্থনা করতে চাইলেন । The hermit was outside, হারমিট বাইরেই ছিলেন, on his knees, হাঁটু গেরে বসে , sowing seeds in the beds that had been dug the day before. বীজ বুনছিলেন আগের দিনের প্রস্তুত করা বীজতলা গুলিতে।

The Tsar approached him, and said, জার তাঁর কাছে গেলেন এবং বললেন , "For the last time, I pray you to answer my questions, wise man." শেষবারের মতো, বিজ্ঞ ব্যাক্তি, আমার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর প্রার্থনা করছি। "You have already been answered!" তুমি ইতিপূর্বেই উত্তর পেয়ে গেছ, said the hermit still crouching on his thin legs,হারমিট বললেন তখনও তাঁর সুরু সুরু পায়ের ওপর বসে থেকে and looking up at the Tsar, এবং জারের দিকে তাকিয়ে ,

who stood before him. যিনি তাঁর সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন।
"How answered? কীভাবে উত্তর পেলাম? What do you mean?" কি বোঝাতে চান আপনি? asked the King. জার বললেন।
"Do you not see," replied the hermit. হারমিট বললেন, তুমি বুঝতে পারছ না ।

"If you had not pitied my weakness yesterday, তুমি যদি গতকাল আমার দুর্বলতাকে করুণা না করতে, and had not dug these beds for me, এবং আমার জন্য বীজতলা না খুঁড়তে but had gone your way, বরং নিজের রাস্তায় হাঁটা দিতে ,that man would have attacked you, ওই লোকটি তোমায় আক্রমণ করত, and you would have repented of not having stayed with me. এবং অনুতাপ করতে আমার সঙ্গে না থেকে যাওয়ার জন্যে । So the most important time was when you were digging the beds; তাই সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি বীজতলা খুঁড়ছিলে; and I was the most important man; এবং আমি ছিলাম সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি;

and to do me good was your most important business. আর আমার ভাল করাটা ছিল তোমার একমাত্র কাজ। Afterwards, when that man ran to us, পড়ে যখন ওই লোকটি আমাদের ছুটে এল , the most important time was when you were attending to him, সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি ওর পরিচর্যা করছিলে, for if you had not bound up his wounds কারন তুমি যদি ওর ক্ষত স্থানে বাঁধন না দিতে he would have died without having made peace with you. ও মারা যেত তোমার সঙ্গে শান্তি স্থাপন না করেই।

So he was the most important man, তাই ওই লোকটি ছিল সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি ,and what you did for him was your most important business. আর তুমি ওর জন্য যা কিছু করেছিলে তাই ছিল তোমার সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ। Remember then: তাহলে মনে রাখঃ there is only one time that is important -- and that is now! একটাই সময় আছে , যা সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ – তা এখন। It is the most important time এটাই সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় because it is the only time when we have any power. কারন এটাই একমাত্র সময় যখন আমাদের কিছু খমতা থাকে ।

The most necessary man is he with whom you are, সবথেকে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যক্তি সেইজন যার সঙ্গে তুমি তখন রয়েছ , for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with any one else. কেন –না কেউই জানে না অন্য কারও সঙ্গে তাঁর আর কখনো কোনো লেনদেন হবে কি না, And the most important affair is, to do him good, এবং সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল, তাঁর ভালো করা, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!" যেহেতু একমাত্র সেই কারনেই মানুষকে এই জীবনে পাঠানো হয়েছে।

When all the birds are faint with the hot sun,

(যখন সমস্ত পাখিরা সূর্যের প্রচণ্ড উত্তাপে মূর্ছা যায়)

And hide in cooling trees, a voice will run (এবং লুকিয়ে পড়ে ঠান্ডা গাছের তলায়, একটি গলার আওয়াজ ভেসে বেড়াই)

From hedge to hedge about the new-mown mead;

(ঝোপ থেকে আরেক ঝোপে সদ্য কাটা তৃণভূমির)

That is the Grasshopper's-he takes the lead 

(এটাই হল ঘাসফড়িং এর গান - সে দায়িত্ব নেই )

In summer luxury, he has never done

On the Monday night after Jimmy wrote this letter, Ben Price jogged unobtrusively into Elmore in a livery buggy.

This poem is a sonnet. A sonnet is a short poem of fourteen lines, of which the first eight lines are called octave, which are followed by a turn of thought, called the volta. The last six lines is called sestet, which offers a new direction to the poem. In this poem, Wordsworth describes his native city of London. The poet is impressed by the beauty of his city in the early morning sunlight. The poet finds the majestic sight to be full of inspiration. The city is fully clothed in the beauty of the morning. The bustle and din of the day had not begun yet. The ships, the towers and the buildings are glimmering in the sun. The poet finds the unparalleled beauty of the morning spread over valleys, rocks and hills. It is a serene scene. The massive pulse of civilisation is lying in calm peace.

I had the train compartment to myself up to Rohana, then a girl got in. The couple who saw her off were probably her parents; they seemed very anxious about her comfort, and the woman gave the girl detailed instructions as to where to keep her things, when not to lean out of windows, and how to avoid speaking to strangers.

They called their goodbyes and the train pulled out of the station. As I was totally blind at the time, my eyes sensitive only to light and darkness, I was unable to tell what the girl looked like; but I knew she wore slippers from the way they slapped against her heels.

আমি অবাক হয়ে ভাবলাম, সে কি তার চুলে খোঁপায় বেঁধেছে, অথবা যদি এটি বিনুনি করে; সম্ভবত এটি তার কাঁধের উপর আলগা ঝুলছিল, অথবা এটি ছোট করে ছাঁটা ছিল?

The train drew slowly into the station.

ট্রেনটি ধীরে ধীরে স্টেশনে ঢুকল।

Outside, there was the shouting of porters and vendors and a high-pitched female voice near the carriage door; that voice must have belonged to the girl’s aunt.

বাইরে, কুলি ও ফেরিওয়ালাদের চ্যাঁচামেচি এবং গাড়ির দরজার কাছে একটি উঁচু-পর্দার মহিলা কণ্ঠস্বর; সেই কণ্ঠ অবশ্যই মেয়েটির মাসির ছিল।

“Goodbye,” the girl said.

“বিদায়,” মেয়েটি বলল।

She was standing very close to me, so close that the perfume from her hair was tantalising.

সে আমার খুব কাছাকাছি দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল, এত কাছে যে তার চুল থেকে নিঃসস্রিত সুবাস ছিল বাসনা উদ্রেককারী, যা পূরণ হবার নয়।

I wanted to raise my hand and touch her hair, but she moved away.

আমি হাত বাড়িয়ে তার চুল স্পর্শ করতে চেয়েছিলাম, কিন্তু সে সরে গেল।

Only the scent of perfume still lingered where she had stood.

যেখানে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল সেখানে কেবল সুগন্ধির ঘ্রাণই রয়ে গেছে।

There was some confusion in the doorway.

দরজায় কাছে কিছু বিভ্রান্তির তৈরি হয়েছিল।

A man, getting into the compartment, stammered an apology.

একজন লোক, কামরায় ঢুকে, আমতা আমতা করে ক্ষমা চাওয়া শুরু করল।

Then the door banged, and the world was shut out again.

তারপর দরজাটা দড়াম করে  বন্ধ হল, এবং পৃথিবীটা আবারও বন্ধ হয়ে গেল।

I returned to my berth.

The man who had entered the compartment broke into my reverie.

“She was an interesting girl,” I said.

“আপনি কি আমাকে বলতে পারেন, সে কি তার চুল লম্বা রেখেছিল নাকি ছোট?”

“I don’t remember,” he said, sounding puzzled.

“আমার মনে নেই,” তিনি বিস্মিত হয়ে বললেন।

“It was her eyes I noticed, not her hair.

“আমি তার চোখ লক্ষ্য করেছি, তার চুল নয়।

She had beautiful eyes-but they were of no use to her.

তার সুন্দর চোখ ছিল-কিন্তু সেগুলো তার কোন কাজে আসেনি।

She was completely blind.

সে ছিল সম্পূর্ণ অন্ধ।
