Tragic Train Crash in Balasore Claims 288 Lives, Leaves Over 1,100 Injured

Balasore, Odisha, 3rd June, 2023: A devastating train crash in Balasore has resulted in a staggering loss of at least 288 lives, with over 1,100 people sustaining injuries. The collision occurred between the Bengaluru-Howrah Express, the Superfast Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express, and a stationary goods train near the Bahanaga Bazar station at about 6:30 pm yesterday. Preliminary investigations reveal that the Coromandel Express mistakenly entered the loop line instead of the main line, colliding with the parked goods train. Subsequently, the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express collided with the scattered coaches of the Coromandel Express on an adjacent track. A man, who witnessed the accident, said, "We rushed to the spot and saw handless and legless bodies lying everywhere. People were frantically searching for their relatives. The scene is too terrible to describe,"

The rescue operations are in full swing. The injured passengers were the nearby hospital. taken to the Several trains have been cancelled, while many were diverted as restoration work is underway. The Indian Railways has announced ex- gratia payments of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 2 lakh for the severely injured, and Rs 50,000 for those with minor injuries. A high-level committee has been formed to inquire about Balasore tragedy.

Project on Dramatization of The Eyes Have It / The Eyes Are Not Here

 

Introduction :  "The Eyes Have It" also known as "The Eyes Are Not Here" is a short story by Ruskin Bond that was originally published in Contemporary Indian English Stories. The narrator of this story, a blind man whose eyes were sensitive to light and darkness, was going to Dehradun by train when he met a girl and had a chit-chat with her. It was only after she left and another passenger came into the compartment that the narrator realises the girl was blind. I am honoured to have given the opportunity of dramatizing the story ‘ The Eyes Have It’ by Ruskin Bond .

The narrator - The narrator of the story who was completely blind at that time.

The girl - The young blind girl whom probably her parents have come to see off. 

The third passenger - The male passenger who got into the train at Saharanpur station. 

Time                          : Day time

Place          : Rohana, in the train compartment

Scene                         : The narrator was going to Dehra by a train. A girl got into the train  from Rohana station.

                       Scene – 1

(The narrator had the train compartment to himself up to Rohana, then a girl got in. The couple who saw her off were probably her parents. They seemed very anxious about her comfort and the woman gave the girl detailed instructions as to where to keep her things, when not to lean out of windows, and how to avoid speaking to strangers.

                  They called their goodbyes and the train pulled out of the station. As he was totally blind at the time, my eyes sensitive only to light and darkness, he was unable to tell what the girl looked like. But I knew she wore slippers from the way they slapped against her heels. It would take me some time to discover something about her looks and perhaps he never would. But he liked the sound of her voice and even the sound of her slippers.)

The narrator : Are you going all the way to Dehra?

(He must have been sitting in a dark corner because my voice startled her.)

The girl : (giving a little exclamation) I didn't know anyone else was here.

(Well, it often happens that people with good eyesight fail to see what is right in front of them. They have too much to take in, he supposes. Whereas people who cannot see (or see very little) have to take in only the essentials, whatever registers tellingly on their remaining senses.)

The narrator : I didn't see you either. But I heard you come in.

(The narrator wondered if I would be able to prevent her from discovering that he was blind. Provided he keeps to him seat, he thought, it shouldn't be too difficult.)

The girl : I am getting off at Saharanpur. My aunt is meeting me there.'

The narrator   : Then I had better not get too familiar. Aunts are usually formidable creatures.

The girl  : Where are you going?

The narrator : To Dehra and then to Mussoorie.'

The girl  : Oh, how lucky you are. I wish I were going to Mussoorie. I love the hills. Especially in October.'

The narrator : (calling on my memories )Yes, this is the best time. The hills are covered with wild dahlias, the sun is delicious, and at night you can sit in front of a log fire and drink a little brandy. Most of the tourists have gone and the roads are quiet and almost deserted. Yes, October is the best time.

(She was silent. He wondered if his words had touched her or whether she thought him a romantic fool. Then he made a mistake.)

The narrator    : What is it like outside?

(She seemed to find nothing strange in the question.)

The narrator  : Had she noticed already that I could not see?

(But her next question removed his doubts.)

The girl : Why don't you look out of the window?

(He moved easily along the berth and felt for the window ledge. The window was open and he faced it, making a pretence of studying the landscape. He heard the panting of the engine, the rumble of the wheels, and, in my mind's eye he could see telegraph posts flashing by.)

The narrator : (venturing) Have you noticed that the trees seem to be moving while we seem to be standing still?

The girl  : That always happens. Do you see any animals?'

The narrator : (quite confidently ) No.

(He knew that there were hardly any animals left in the forests near Dehra. He turned from the window and faced the girl and for a while we sat in silence.)

The narrator : You have an interesting face.

(He was becoming quite daring but it was a safe remark. Few girls can resist flattery. She laughed pleasantly—a clear, ringing laugh.)

The girl : It's nice to be told I have an interesting face. I'm tired of people telling me I have a pretty face.)

The narrator : Oh, so you do have a pretty face, thought I. Well, an interesting face can also be pretty.

The girl : You are a very gallant young man/ she said. But why are you so serious?

(He thought, then, that he would try to laugh for her, but the thought of laughter only made him feel troubled and lonely.)

The narrator : We'll soon be at your station.

The girl : Thank goodness it's a short journey. I can't bear to sit in a train for more than two or three hours.

(Yet he was prepared to sit there for almost any length of time, just to listen to her talking. Her voice had the sparkle of a mountain stream. As soon as she left the train she would forget our brief encounter. But it would stay with me for the rest of the journey and for some time after the engine's whistle shrieked, the carriage wheels changed their sound and rhythm, the girl got up and began to collect her things. He wondered if she wore her hair in a bun or if it was plaited. Perhaps it was hanging loose over her shoulders. Or was it cut very short? 

The train drew slowly into the station. Outside, there was the shouting of porters and vendors and a high-pitched female voice near the carriage door. That voice must have belonged to the girl's aunt.)

The girl  : Goodbye.

(She was standing very close to me. So close that the perfume from her hair was tantalizing. I wanted to raise my hand and touch her hair but she moved away. Only the scent of perfume still lingered where she had stood.)

                       Scene – 2

There was some confusion in the doorway. A man, getting into the compartment, stammered an apology. Then the door banged and the world was shut out again. He returned to my berth. The guard blew his whistle and we moved off. Once again I had a game to play and a new fellow traveler.

                The train gathered speed, the wheels took up their song, the carriage groaned and shook. He found the window and sat in front of it, staring into the daylight that was darkness for him .So many things were happening outside the window. It could be a fascinating game guessing what went on out there.

                        The man who had entered the compartment broke into my reverie.

The third passenger : You must be disappointed. I'm not nearly as attractive a travelling companion as the one who just left.

The narrator : She was an interesting girl. Can you tell me—did she keep her hair long or short?'

The third passenger  : (sounding puzzled ) I don't remember. It was her eyes I noticed, not her hair. She had beautiful eyes but they were of no use to her. She was completely blind. Didn't you notice?

এটি শেক্সপিয়ারের লেখা 154 টি সনেটের মধ্যে 18 নম্বর সনেট। কবিতাটি প্রকাশিত হয় 1609 সালে। কবিতাটি আয়াম্বিক পেন্টামিটারে লেখা। কবিতাটিতে তিনটি কোয়াট্রেন এবং একটি কাপলেট আছে। কবি এই কবিতাটি তে তার প্রিয় বন্ধু উইলিয়াম হার্বার্ড কে উদ্দেশ্য করে লিখেছেন। উইলিয়াম হার্বার্ড ছিলেন আর্ল ওফ্ পেমব্রক।

কবি লক্ষ করেন আমরা এবং পৃথিবীর সমস্ত বস্তু সময়ের হাতে আবদ্ধ। সময় প্রত্যেককে কোন না কোন সময় গ্রাস করবে। সময়ের হাত থেকে কেউ রেহাই পাবে না। সময় প্রত্যেককে তাদের গন্তব্য স্থল মৃত্যুর কাছে নিয়ে যায়। এই ভাবনা কবিকে খুব ব্যথিত করে। তিনি কোনোভাবেই মেনে নিতে পারেন না যে তার বন্ধু যাকে তিনি এত ভালবাসেন তাকেও একদিন মরতে হবে, তাকেও একদিন তার যৌবন সৌন্দর্য হারাতে হবে। এই ভাবনা কবির কাছে খুব কষ্টকর।

কিন্তু কবি হাল ছাড়লেন না। তিনি তার বন্ধুকে অমর করার জন্য কবিতার আশ্রয় নিলেন। তিনি দেখলেন পৃথিবীর সবকিছু সেগুলি কুঁড়ি ফুলের মত সুন্দর হোক না কেন, গ্রীষ্মের মত আরামদায়ক হোক না কেন, বা সূর্যের মতো বিশাল হোক না কেন, একদিন না একদিন তার সৌন্দর্য বা শক্তি হারাতেই হবে দূর্ঘটনাবশত বা সময়ের সাথে সাথে।

কিন্তু কবি মনে করেন তার বন্ধু গ্রীষ্মের দিন ও কুঁড়ি ফুলের থেকেও বেশি সুন্দর এবং দীর্ঘস্থায়ী। ফুল এবং গ্রীষ্মকাল যতই সুন্দর হোক না কেন, তা ক্ষণস্থায়ী। বন্ধুর সাথে তাদের কোনো তুলনাই চলে না। এমনকি যে সূর্য একদা প্রচন্ড উত্তাপ দেয়, কখনো কখনো তার উত্তাপ ফিকে হয়ে যায়। এক কথায় কবি বলেছেন যে পৃথিবীর সমস্ত সুন্দর জিনিস থেকে তার সৌন্দর্য হারাবেই দূর্ঘটনাবশত বা সময়ের পরিবর্তনশীল নিয়মে।

কিন্তু কবি বিশ্বাস করেন তার বন্ধুর যৌবন এবং সৌন্দর্য কোনদিনই হারিয়ে যাবে না। এমনকি মৃত্যুও কবির বন্ধুকে দাবি করতে পারবে না কারণ কবিতার অমর লাইনগুলোতে কবির বন্ধুর সৌন্দর্য ধীরে ধীরে বেড়েই চলবে। কবি আর ও বিশ্বাস করেন, যতদিন পৃথিবীতে মানুষ বেঁচে থাকবে ততদিন তার কবিতা বেঁচে থাকবে এবং ততদিন ধরে তার বন্ধুকে অমর করে রাখবে।

এই কবিতার মধ্যে দিয়ে কবি তার কবিতার উপর দৃঢ় বিশ্বাস দেখিয়েছেন যে কবিতা যেকোনো বিষয়বস্তুকে চিরকালের জন্য অমর করে দিতে পারে।

Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? 

আমি কি তোমায় গ্রীষ্মের দিনের সাথে তুলনা করতে পারি?

Thou art more lovely and more temperate.

তুমি গ্রীষ্মের দিনের থেকে কত বেশী সুন্দর এবং অপরিবর্তনশীল।

Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,

ঝড়ো বাতাস মে মাসের সুন্দর কুঁড়ি ফুলকে ঝড়িয়ে দেয়,

And summer's lease hath all too short a date.

এবং গ্রীষ্মকালের মেয়াদ খুব অল্পদিনের।

Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,

মাঝে মাঝে সূর্য খুব উত্তাপ দেয়,

And often is his gold complexion dimmed;

এবং প্রায়শই তার সোনালী রং ফিকে হয়ে যায়;

And every fair from fair sometime declines,

I was born into a middle class Tamil family in the island town of Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras state.

আমি জন্মে ছিলাম পূর্বতন মাদ্রাজ রাজ্যের অন্তর্গত দ্বীপ শহর রামেশ্বরমে এক মধ্যবিত্ত তামিল পরিবারে। 

My father, Jainulabdeen, had neither much formal education nor much wealth; 

আমার পিতা জইনুলাব্দিনের না ছিল তেমন প্রথাগত শিক্ষা না ছিল তেমন সম্পত্তি ; . 

despite these disadvantages, he possessed great innate wisdom and a true generosity of spirit. 

এই অসুবিধাগুলো থাকা সত্ত্বেও, তাঁর ছিল মহান সহজাত প্রজ্ঞা ও অন্তরের এক অকপট বদান্যতা । 

He had an ideal helpmate in my mother, Ashiamma.

We lived in our ancestral house,

in terms of food, medicine or clothing.

In fact, I would say mine was a very secure childhood, materially and emotionally. 

সত্যি বলতে , আমি বলি আমার শৈশব পার্থিব ও আধ্যাত্মিক ভাবে খুব নিরাপদে কেটেছে। 

I normally ate with my mother, 

আমি সাধারণত আমার মায়ের খেতাম, 

sitting on the floor of the kitchen.

She would place a banana leaf before me,

 তিনি আমার সামনে একটি কলাপাতা মেলে দিতেন, 

on which she then ladled rice and aromatic sambar, 

যার ওপর তিনি একটি হাতায় করে ভাত এবং সুগন্ধি ডাল 

a variety of sharp, home-made pickle and a dollop of fresh coconut chutney. 

নানান ধরণের ঘরে তৈরি ঝাঁঝালো আচার এবং এক দলা নারকেলের চাটনি। 

The Shiva temple, which made Rameswaram so famous to pilgrims, 

শিব মন্দির , যেটি রামেশ্বরমকে বিখ্যাত করেছে হিন্দু তীর্থযাত্রীদের কাছে, 

was about a ten- minute walk from our house. 

আমাদের বাড়ি থেকে ১০ মিনিটের হাঁটা পথ ছিল।

 Our locality was predominantly Muslim,

 আমাদের এলাকাটি ছিল মুসলিম অধ্যুষিত , 

but there were quite a lot of Hindu families too,

কিন্তু সেখানে কিছু হিন্দু পরিবার ও বসবাস করত,

 living amicably with their Muslim neighbours. 

তারা তাদের মুসলিম প্রতিবেশীদের সঙ্গে মিলেমিশে বাস করত। 

There was a very old mosque in our locality 

আমাদের এলাকাতে একটি পুরানো মসজিদ ছিল

 where my father would take me for evening prayers. 

যেখানে আমার পিতা আমাকে সন্ধ্যার প্রার্থনায় নিয়ে যেতেন। 

I had not the faintest idea of the meaning of the Arabic prayers chanted, 

আমার সামান্যতম ধারনা ছিলনা এই আরবি ভাষায় উচ্চারিত প্রার্থনায়। 

but I was totally convinced that they reach God. 

কিন্তু সেগুলি যে ভগবানের কাছে পৌঁছাত সে ব্যাপারে আ্মাকে পুরোপুরি বোঝানো হয়েছিল।

 When my father came out of the mosque after the prayers, 

প্রার্থনার পরে যখন আমার পিতা মসজিদের বাইরে আসতেন 

people of different religions would be sitting outside, waiting for him.

বিভিন্ন ধর্মের লোকেরা বাইরে বসে অপেক্ষা করতেন। 

Many of them offered bowls of water to my father, 

তাদের মধ্যে অনেকেই পিতার হাতে জল ভরতি বাটি বারিয়ে দিতেন, 

who would dip his fingertips in them and say a prayer. 

তিনি আঙুলের ডগা তাঁর মধ্যে ডুবিয়ে কি এক্তা প্রার্থনা করতেন। 

This water was then carried home for invalids. 

তারপর সেই জল তারা অসুস্থ ব্যক্তির আরোগ্যের জন্য বাড়ি নিয়ে যেতেন। 

I also remember people visiting our home to offer thanks after being cured. 

আমার এ ও মনে পড়ে লোকেরা আরোগ্যলাভের প্র বাড়ীতে এসে পিতাকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে যেতেন।

 Father always smiled and asked them to thank Allah, the merciful. 

তিনি মৃদু হেঁসে বলতেন করুণাময় ঈশ্বরকেই ধন্যবাদ জানাতে।

The high priest of Rameswaram temple,

 রামেশ্বরম শিব মন্দিরের প্রধান পুরোহিত ,

 Pakshi Lakshmana Sastry, 

পক্ষী লক্ষ্মণ শাস্ত্রী , 

was a very close friend of my father’s.

 আমার পিতার ঘনিষ্ঠ বন্ধু ছিলেন। 

one of the most vivid memories of my early childhood, 

আমার শৈশব কালের স্মৃতি গুলির মধ্যে একটি ঘটনা স্পষ্ট মনে পড়ে, 

is of the two men, 

দুজন ব্যাক্তি, 

each in traditional attire, 

তাদের ঐতিহ্যবাহী পোশাক প্রিহিত অবস্থায় আধ্যাত্নিক বিষয় নিয়ে আলোচনা করতেন। 

When I was old enough to ask questions,

যখন আমি যথেষ্ট বড়ো হয়ে ছিলাম প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞেস ক্রার মতো, 

I asked my father about the relevance of prayer. 

আমি আমার পিতাকে প্রার্থনা ক্রার তাৎপর্য সম্বন্ধে প্রশ্ন করেছিলাম। 

My father told me there was nothing mysterious about prayer. 

আমার পিতা আমাকে বলেছিলেন, প্রার্থনার মধ্যে কোন রহস্য নেই। 

Rather, prayer made possible a communion of the spirit between people.

 বরং প্রার্থনা মানুষের আত্মার মধ্যে পারস্পরিক সম্পর্ক স্থাপন করে। 

“When you pray,” he said, 

তিনি আর ও বলতেন , “যখন তুমি ভগবানের উদ্দেশ্যে প্রার্থনা করবে, ” 

”you transcend your, body and become a part of the cosmos, which knows no division of wealth, age, caste, or creed.” 

“তোমার শরীর পার্থিব জগত ছাড়িয়ে এই বিশ্বব্রহ্মাণ্ডের অংশ হয়ে উঠবে, যেখানে ধনসম্পদ, বয়স, জাতি, বর্ণ ও ধর্মের কোন ভেদাভেদ নেই। ”

 

My father could convey complex spiritual concepts in very simple, down-to-earth Tamil. 

আমার পিতা জটিল , আধ্যাত্নিক ধারনা গুলিকে খুব সহজে কথ্য তামিল ভাষায় বোঝাতে পারতেন। 

He once told me, 

তিনি একবার আমাকে বলেছিলেন,

 “In his own time,

 “ তাঁর নিজস্ব সময়ে, 

in his own place,

 তাঁর নিজস্ব জায়গায়, 

in what he really is, 

প্রকৃতই সে যে অবস্থায় থাকুক না কেন , 

and in the stage he has reached-good or bad- 

ভাল কিংবা মন্দ যে অবস্থায় সে পৌঁছোক না কেন- 

every human beings is a specific element within the whole of the manifest divine Being. 

প্রতিটি মানুষই এই সমগ্র ঐশ্বরিক জগতের এক একটি মৌলিক সত্ত্বা। 

So why be afraid of difficulties, sufferings and problems? 

তাহলে বা বাধাবিপত্তি, দুঃখকষ্ট, বিপদ-আপদে ভয় কেন? 

When troubles come, try to understand the relevance of your sufferings. 

যখন বাধা আসবে, বোঝার চেষ্টা করবে তোমার ভোগান্তির প্রাসঙ্গিকতা। 

Adversity always presents opportunities for introspection.” 

প্রতিকুলতা সর্বদাই আত্মদর্শনের সুযোগ এনে দেয়। ”

“Why don’t you say this to the people who come to you for help and advice?” I asked my father.

“যারা সাহায্য এবং পরামর্শ নেওয়ার জন্য তোমার কাছে আসে তাদেরকে তুমি এটা বল না কেন?” বাবাকে জিজ্ঞেস করেছিলাম।

He put his hands on my shoulders and looked straight into my eyes.

তিনি আমার কাঁধে তার হাত রাখলেন এবং সরাসরি আমার চোখের দিকে তাকালেন।

For quite some time he said nothing, as if he was judging my capacity to comprehend his words.

বেশ কিছুক্ষণ তিনি কিছুই বললেন না, যেন তিনি তাঁর কথাগুলো আমার বোঝার ক্ষমতা বিচার করছিলেন।

Then he answered in a low, deep voice.

Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimband (1854-1891) was a French poem from the nineteenth century. He started writing poetry even before he reached his teens. He stopped writing poetry at the age of nineteen. His major works include To Music, Evening prayer. The present poem, originally titled Le Dormeur le Val, was included in his collection of poetry called, Poesis (1872).

This poem is written in the model of the Italian sonnet that has fourteen lines divided as octave and sestet. The poet explores the inherent futility of war. It once occurred to a certain Tsar,

that if he always knew the right time to begin everything;

if he knew who were the right people to listen to, 

যদি জানতেন কাদের কথা তিনি শুনবেন 

and whom to avoid,

and, above all,

if he always knew what was the most important thing to do,

And learned men came to the Tsar,

In reply to the first question, 

প্রথম প্রশ্নের উত্তরে , 

some said that 

কেউ কেউ বললেন যে 

to know the right time for every action, প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় জানতে, 

one must draw up in advance, 

যে কাউকেই আগের থেকে তৈরি করে ফেলতে হবে 

a table of days, months and years, 

দিন , মাস, ও বছরের একটি তালিকা 

and must live strictly according to it. 

এবং কঠোর ভাবে জীবন যাপন করতে হবে সেই অনুযায়ী।

 Only thus, শুধুমাত্র এইভাবেই, 

said they, তাঁরা বলেছিল, 

could everything be done at its proper time.

প্রতিটি কাজ সঠিক সময়ে করা যেতে পারে।

Others declared that 

অন্যরা জানাল যে 

it was impossible to decide beforehand the right time for every action; 

প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় আগের থেকে স্থির করা একেবারেই অসম্ভব ; 

but that, not letting oneself be absorbed in idle pastimes, 

কিন্তূ অলস অবসর বিনোদনে নিজেকে নিমগ্ন না রেখে 

one should always attend to all that was going on, 

যে কারুরই উচিত সর্বদা যা কিছু ঘটে চলেছে তাতেই মনোনিবেশ করা, 

and then do what was most needful.

Others, again, said that 

আবার অন্যরা বললেন যে 

however attentive the Tsar might be to what was going on,

it was impossible for one man to decide correctly the right time for every action,

But then again others said 

কিন্তু তারপরে অন্যরা আবার বললেন 

there were some things which could not wait to be laid before a Council, 

এমন অনেক ব্যপার আছে যেগুলি সভাসদদের সামনে উত্থাপিত হওয়া পর্যন্ত অপেক্ষা করতে পারে না, 

but about which one had at once to decide whether to undertake them or not. 

কিন্তু সেগুলোর ব্যাপারে সেই মুহূর্তে সিদ্ধান্ত্য নিতে হয় সে কাজে হস্তক্ষেপ করা হবে কি হবে না। 

But in order to decide that, 

কিন্তু শুধুমাত্র এই সিধান্ত নিতে, 

one must know beforehand what was going to happen. 

অতি অবশ্যই যে কারুরই আগের থেকে জানতে হবে কি ঘটতে চলেছে। 

It is only magicians who know that; and, আর এটি শুধুমাত্র যাদুকররাই জানে ; আর

therefore, in order to know the right time for every action,

তাই প্রতিটি কাজের সঠিক সময় জানার জন্য 

one must consult magicians.

Equally various were the answers to the second question. 

একই রকম ভাবে ভিন্ন ভিন্ন ছিল দ্বিতীয় প্রশ্নের উত্তর ও । 

Some said, কেউ কেউ বললেন , 

the people the Tsar most needed were his councilors; 

জারের সবথেকে যাদের বেশি দরকার তাঁরা হলেন তাঁর সভাসদগন ; 

others, the priests;  

 অন্যরা বললেন, পুরহিতগণ

others, the doctors; 

অন্যরা বললেন ডাক্তারগন ; 

while some said the warriors were the most necessary. 

আবার কয়েকজন বললেন যোদ্ধারা সবথেকে দরকারি

To the third question, 

তৃতীয় প্রশ্নের উত্তরে 

as to what was the most important occupation: 

সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ কিঃ 

some replied that 

কেউ কেউ উত্তর দিলেন যে

 the most important thing in the world was science.

জগতে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল বিজ্ঞান চর্চা

 Others said it was skill in warfare; 

অন্যরা বললেন , তা হল যুদ্ধে দক্ষতা ; 

and others, again, 

আবার অন্যরা বললেন 

that it was religious worship. 

যে সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল ধর্মীয় পূজার্চনা। All the answers being different, 

সকল উত্তর ভিন্ন ভিন্ন হওয়ায়, 

the Tsar agreed with none of them, 

জার কারও উত্তরে সহমত হলেন না, 

and gave the reward to none. 

এবং কাহাকেও পুরস্কৃত করলেন না। 

But still wishing to find the right answers to his questions, 

কিন্তূ তাঁর প্রশ্নগুলোর সঠিক উত্তর জানার ইচ্ছেয়

he decided to consult a hermit, 

তিনি এক সন্ন্যাসীর সহিত পরামর্শের সিদ্ধান্ত নিলেন, 

widely renowned for his wisdom. 

যিনি তাঁর জ্ঞানের জন্যে বিক্ষাত ছিলেন।

The hermit lived in a wood which he never quitted, 

হারমিট বাস করতেন এক জঙ্গলে যেখান থেকে তিনি কক্ষনো বাইরে আসেননি 

and he received none but common folk.

এবং তিনি সাধারণ লোক ছাড়া অন্যকাউকে গ্রহণ করতেন না। 

So the Tsar put on simple clothes, 

তাই জার সাধারণ পোশাক পরলেন 

and before reaching the hermit's cell dismounted from his horse, 

আর হারমিটের কুটীরে পৌঁছনোর আগে তাঁর ঘোড়া থেকে নেমে পড়লেন 

and, leaving his bodyguard behind, went on alone.

আর দেহরক্ষীকে পেছনে রেখে তিনি একাকি চললেন।

When the Tsar approached, 

জার যখন পৌঁছলেন 

the hermit was digging the ground in front of his hut. 

কুটীরের সামনে হারমিট মাটি খুঁড়ছিলেন।

Seeing the Tsar, he greeted him and went on digging. 

জারকে দেখিয়া, তিনি স্বাগত জানালেন এবং আবার মাটি খুঁড়তে রইলেন।

The hermit was frail and weak, 

হারমিট শীর্ণকায় ও দুর্বল ছিলেন। 

and each time he stuck his spade into the ground and turned a little earth, 

এবং প্রত্যেকবার তিনি মাটিতে কোদালের কোপ দিয়ে অতিঅল্প মাটি উল্টে 

he breathed heavily. 

তিনি জোরে জোরে শ্বাস নিচ্ছিলেন। 

The Tsar went up to him and said: 

জার তাঁর কাছে গেলেন এবং বললেন, 

"I have come to you, wise hermit, 

আমি আপনার কাছে এসেছি , বিজ্ঞ হারমিট, 

to ask you to answer three questions: আপনার কাছ থেকে তিনটি প্রশ্নের উত্তর জানতেঃ

How can I learn to do the right thing at the right time? 

আমি কীভাবে সঠিক সময়ে সঠিক কাজটা করা শিখতে পারি ? 

Who are the people I most need, 

আমার সবথেকে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যক্তি কারা ,

and to whom should I, therefore, pay more attention than to the rest? 

এবং ,সেকারনে, কাদের প্রতি অন্যদের তুলনায় বেশি মনযোগ দেওয়া উচিৎ? 

And, what affairs are the most important and need my first attention?" 

এবং কোন ব্যাপারগুলো সবচেয়ে বেশি গুরুত্বপূর্ণ , এবং জাতে আমার প্রথম মনোযোগ দেওয়া উচিৎ।

The hermit listened to the Tsar, 

হারমিট জারের কথা শুনলেন, 

but answered nothing. 

কিন্তূ কোন উত্তর দিলেন না । 

He just spat on his hand and recommenced digging. 

তিনি তাঁর হাতে থুতু ফেললেন এবং আবার মাটি খুঁড়তে শুরু করলেন। 

"You are tired," said the Tsar, 

জার বললেন, আপনি ক্লান্ত 

"let me take the spade and work awhile for you." 

আমাকে কোদালটি নিতে দিন এবং কিছুক্ষণের জন্য কাজ করতে দিন আপনার জন্য। 

"Thanks!" said the hermit,

and, giving the spade to the Tsar,

and continued to dig.

One hour passed, একঘণ্টা কাটল

and the Tsar at last stuck the spade into the ground, and said,

আপনি যদি আমায় উত্তর না দিতে পারবেন, 

tell me so, আমাকে বলুন 

and I will return home."

"Here comes some one running," 

এদিকে কেউ একজন ছুটতে ছুটতে আসছে 

said the hermit, হারমিট বললেন, 

"let us see who it is."   দেখা যাক কে তিনি।
The Tsar turned round,   জার পেছনে ঘুরলেন,

 and saw a bearded man come running out of the wood. 

এবং দেখলেন একজন দাঁড়ি ওয়ালা লোক ছুটতে ছুটতে বন থেকে আসছে।

The man held his hands pressed against his stomach, লোকটি দুহাত দিয়ে পেটে চেপে ধরে রেখেছে and blood was flowing from under them. আর তার তলা দিয়ে রক্ত গল গল করে বইছে। When he reached the Tsar, সে যখন জারের কাছে পৌঁছল , he fell fainting on the ground moaning feebly. সে মাটিতে লুটিয়ে পড়ল ক্ষীণভাবে বিড়বিড় করতে করতে। The Tsar and the hermit unfastened the man's clothing. জার এবং হারমিট লোকটির লোকটির পোশাকের বাঁধন খুলেফেললেন। There was a large wound in his stomach. তার পেটে এক বিরাট ক্ষত ।

The Tsar washed it as best he could, জার সেটাকে যতটা ভালোভাবে পারেন পরিষ্কার করলেন and bandaged it with his handkerchief and with a towel the hermit had.এবং ক্ষতটিতে বাঁধন দিলেন তাঁর রুমাল এবং হারমিটের তোয়ালে দিয়ে। But the blood would not stop flowing, কিন্তূ রক্ত বওয়া বন্ধ হল না and the Tsar again and again remove the bandage soaked with warm blood ,

এবং এক দৃষ্টে তাকিয়ে রয়েছে জ্বলজ্বল চোখে। "Forgive me!" said the bearded man in a weak voice, দাঁড়ি ওয়ালা লোকটি দুর্বল স্বরে বললেন “ আমায় ক্ষমা করুণ ” , when he saw that the Tsar was awake and was looking at him. যখন সে দেখল জার জেগে উঠেছেন এবং তাকে দেখছেন। "I do not know you, and have nothing to forgive you for," said the Tsar. জার বললেন “আমি তোমাকে চিনি না, তাই ক্ষমা করার কোন কারন নেই ” । 

"You do not know me, but I know you. আপনি আমাকে চেনেন না, কিন্তূ আমি আপনাকে চিনি । I am that enemy of yours আমি আপনার সেই শত্রু who swore to revenge himself on you, যে আপনার উপর প্রতিশোধ নিতে চেয়েছিল because you executed his brother and seized his property. কারন আপনি তার ভাইকে প্রাণদণ্ড দিয়েছেন এবং তাঁর সম্পত্তি বাজেয়াপ্ত করেছেন

I knew you had gone alone to see the hermit, আমি জানতাম আপনি একাকী হারমিটের সহিত দেখা করতে গেছেন, and I resolved to kill you on your way back. এবং আপনার ফেরার পথে আপনাকে হত্যা করে আমার প্রতিহিংসা চরিতার্থের ইচ্ছে ছিল ।

But the day passed and you did not return. কিন্তূ দিন অতিক্রান্ত হল আর আপনি ফিরলেন না So I came out from my ambush to find you, তাই আমি আমার গোপন ডেরা থেকে বেরিয়ে পড়লাম তোমায় খুঁজতে and I came upon your bodyguard, আর আমি এসে পড়লাম তোমার দেহরক্ষীদের হাতে and they recognized me, আর তাঁরা আমাকে চিনতে পারলো and wounded me. এবং আমাকে আহত করল। I escaped from them, আমি কোন রকমে তাদের থেকে বাঁচলাম but should have bled to death had you not dressed my wound. কিন্তূ রক্তপাতের ফলে মারা যেতাম যদিনা আপনি আমার ক্ষত স্থানে বাঁধন দিতেন।

I wished to kill you, কোথায় আমি আপনাকে মারতে চেয়েছিলাম, and you have saved my life. আর তুমি আমার জীবন বাঁচালে। Now, if I live, and if you wish it, এখন , আমি যদি বেঁচে থাকি, আর আপনি যদি চান , I will serve you as your most faithful slave, আমি আপনার সবথেকে বিশ্বাসী দাস হয়ে আপনার সেবা করব, and will bid my sons do the same. এবং আমার ছেলেদের ও বলবো তাই করতে। Forgive me!" আমাকে ক্ষমা করুণ! The Tsar was very glad to have made peace with his enemy so easily, জার খুব খুশি হলেন তাঁর শত্রুর সহিত এত সহজে শান্তি স্থাপন করিয়া ,

and to have gained him for a friend, ও তাকে বন্ধু হিসেবে পেয়ে and he not only forgave him, তিনি শুধু তাকে ক্ষমা করলেন না but said he would send his servants and his own physician to attend him, বরং বললেন তিনি তাঁর চাকরদের ও নিজস্ব চিকিৎসকে পাঠিয়ে দেবেন তার দেখাশোনা করতে and promised to restore his property. এবং স্পথ করলেন তাকে তার সম্পত্তি ফিরিয়ে দেবেন।

Having taken leave of the wounded man, আহত লোকটির কাছ থেকে বিদায় নিয়ে the Tsar went out into the porch and looked around for the hermit. জার কুটীর থেকে বেরিয়ে উঠানে এলেন এবং চারিদিকে হারমিটের খোঁজ করতে লাগলেন । Before going away he wished once more to beg an answer to the questions he had put. চলে যাওয়ার আগে আর একবার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর প্রার্থনা করতে চাইলেন । The hermit was outside, হারমিট বাইরেই ছিলেন, on his knees, হাঁটু গেরে বসে , sowing seeds in the beds that had been dug the day before. বীজ বুনছিলেন আগের দিনের প্রস্তুত করা বীজতলা গুলিতে।

The Tsar approached him, and said, জার তাঁর কাছে গেলেন এবং বললেন , "For the last time, I pray you to answer my questions, wise man." শেষবারের মতো, বিজ্ঞ ব্যাক্তি, আমার প্রশ্নগুলোর উত্তর প্রার্থনা করছি। "You have already been answered!" তুমি ইতিপূর্বেই উত্তর পেয়ে গেছ, said the hermit still crouching on his thin legs,হারমিট বললেন তখনও তাঁর সুরু সুরু পায়ের ওপর বসে থেকে and looking up at the Tsar, এবং জারের দিকে তাকিয়ে ,

who stood before him. যিনি তাঁর সামনে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিলেন।
"How answered? কীভাবে উত্তর পেলাম? What do you mean?" কি বোঝাতে চান আপনি? asked the King. জার বললেন।
"Do you not see," replied the hermit. হারমিট বললেন, তুমি বুঝতে পারছ না ।

"If you had not pitied my weakness yesterday, তুমি যদি গতকাল আমার দুর্বলতাকে করুণা না করতে, and had not dug these beds for me, এবং আমার জন্য বীজতলা না খুঁড়তে but had gone your way, বরং নিজের রাস্তায় হাঁটা দিতে ,that man would have attacked you, ওই লোকটি তোমায় আক্রমণ করত, and you would have repented of not having stayed with me. এবং অনুতাপ করতে আমার সঙ্গে না থেকে যাওয়ার জন্যে । So the most important time was when you were digging the beds; তাই সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি বীজতলা খুঁড়ছিলে; and I was the most important man; এবং আমি ছিলাম সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি;

and to do me good was your most important business. আর আমার ভাল করাটা ছিল তোমার একমাত্র কাজ। Afterwards, when that man ran to us, পড়ে যখন ওই লোকটি আমাদের ছুটে এল , the most important time was when you were attending to him, সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় ছিল যখন তুমি ওর পরিচর্যা করছিলে, for if you had not bound up his wounds কারন তুমি যদি ওর ক্ষত স্থানে বাঁধন না দিতে he would have died without having made peace with you. ও মারা যেত তোমার সঙ্গে শান্তি স্থাপন না করেই।

So he was the most important man, তাই ওই লোকটি ছিল সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ব্যক্তি ,and what you did for him was your most important business. আর তুমি ওর জন্য যা কিছু করেছিলে তাই ছিল তোমার সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ। Remember then: তাহলে মনে রাখঃ there is only one time that is important -- and that is now! একটাই সময় আছে , যা সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ – তা এখন। It is the most important time এটাই সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ সময় because it is the only time when we have any power. কারন এটাই একমাত্র সময় যখন আমাদের কিছু খমতা থাকে ।

The most necessary man is he with whom you are, সবথেকে প্রয়োজনীয় ব্যক্তি সেইজন যার সঙ্গে তুমি তখন রয়েছ , for no man knows whether he will ever have dealings with any one else. কেন –না কেউই জানে না অন্য কারও সঙ্গে তাঁর আর কখনো কোনো লেনদেন হবে কি না, And the most important affair is, to do him good, এবং সবথেকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কাজ হল, তাঁর ভালো করা, because for that purpose alone was man sent into this life!" যেহেতু একমাত্র সেই কারনেই মানুষকে এই জীবনে পাঠানো হয়েছে।
